Hi Dana! I know some pubs use Grammarly because it’s quicker, but it is pretty terrible. Not to judge, but any reputable pub should have enough quality editors that actually read, comment, edit, and help clarify submissions. I have strong opinions about this. ;)

Sure, it’s their publication, so they can choose what they want to publish. But Medium should not be an article factory. Suggestions from Grammarly can absolutely destroy the flow of a piece because of a “passive voice” or an unwanted comma. Silliness!

Yes, you’re absolutely right. Writing should be organic. Some fragments, ideas, poetic license, etc., should all be considered by a human. They need to have the feel and vision and heart to do it properly. I can’t stomach the thought of a computer doing the work. That’s why I joined the team at The Memoirist. We all have the vision to make the stories great for our readers and writers, and anything less is nonsense.
