Every word of this is true, including your delightful imagery. We try so hard to do all these amazing things, and it turns into a shit-show.

I have a friend that thinks glitter is the world’s worst pollutant. It does live for all of eternity in the cracks of the kitchen. Best to just burn the house down and build a new one, I guess.

Never tried the Cheerio thing, but kinetic sand and Play-Doh are marvelous ways of ruining carpeting.
